Research, Access and Design: Accessing the LGBTQ Community
Abstract: This paper is intended to contribute to a small body of work surrounding LGBTQIA+ topics in library and information science. Through a series of interviews and a brief online questionnaire, the authors sought to determine whether individuals felt that their libraries were adequately serving LGBTQIA+ patrons, and what they thought libraries could do to improve their services. While progress has been made, the data shows that libraries still have a long way to go in providing resources for their LGBTQIA+ communities. Findings of note include differences in urban vs. rural library settings, the need to create safe and welcoming environments, and a lack of access to LGBTQIA+ oriented print materials.
E _Resource - Social Justice Collection
Abstract: Our collection consists of free, open access, online sources and services related to Immigration rights and resources that will address the needs of our academic library’s graduate and undergraduate users by providing access points to public services, local advocacy groups, and reference tools that can support immigrant students within our larger community of King County, WA. As an academic library serving a large public university, our collection’s purpose is to serve the curricular and scholarly research needs of our staff and students. But with a large, diverse undergraduate population of roughly 20,000 students, we always aim to serve our users’ information needs at the intersecting points of their multidimensional identities and community memberships. The academic mission of our university and library is only fully achieved when all students have access not just to our programming for academic support but have equal access to support for their personal, financial, health, and community needs in order for them to succeed
